Weaving Technology into Thematic Units

Broad Goals:
Through a love of reading and writing the teacher will introduce several different types of books, and poems on spiders, their habitats, and the areas in which they live. This will be done using a thematic, multimedia teaching approach. The stations for this unit will be planned using various multiple intelligences. As a result of this unit the students will be able to:

- learn about the types of spiders
- learn that spiders have different habitats
- learn that they live in different parts of the world
- recognize the difference between realism and fantasy
- recognize the difference between fiction and nonfiction books
- correctly identify the main character, setting, problem, and
- solution of a story
-   Choose appropriate material for research
-   Implement the writing process
- use the word processor as a writing tool
- use technology as a research tool
- select material to read for pleasure

- write mathematical word problems

Allocation of Time:
The unit will last approximately 4 weeks. The first week will be spent introducing the unit though various whole group activities. The following two weeks will be spent in small groups at stations. The final week will be a wrap-up week. It will be spent making up any stations previously missed, presenting group products and discussing what was learned while working on the unit.

Small Group:
Work at stations daily.

Station Activities:

1. Geosafari: Insect or Spider Code 2747, Special Spiders Code 1975, Alive or Not Alive Code 2980, There’s No Place Like Home Code 2012, Is it an Insect Code 4298, Creepy Crawly Shadows Code 5474, Hidden Creepy Crawlies Code 1356. Activity: Follow the directions on each card to complete each activity. Answer the four questions on the activity sheet. Materials: Geosafari, Geosafari Creepy Crawler Cards, Activity Sheet, and pencil. Time to complete: 30-40 minutes.

2. Computer – Student Writing Center/Acrostic Poem/SPIDERS. Activity: Student will type their acrostic poem on SPIDERS in Student Writing Center. They will also use the Quick Cam and pull in a picture of something we have discussed to go with their poem. Materials: multimedia computer with Student Writing Center Program and whole group acrostic SPIDER poem previously written. Time to complete: 30-40 minutes.

3. Computer – Student Writing Center/Adventures of Spider Story. Activity: Students will type an author page with information about themselves for their Spider Story. They will use the Quick Cam to take their picture and pull it into the author page. Materials: multimedia computer with Student Writing Center Program. Author information page previously compiled. Time to complete: 30–40 minutes.

4. Computer – First Connections The Golden Book Encyclopedia. Research Station. Students will look for information on their spider. They will answer the five questions on the activity sheet provided. Materials: multimedia computer with CD ROM First Connections – The Golden Book Encyclopedia-1995. Activity Sheet and pencil. Time to complete: 30-40 minutes.

5. Listening Station – Magic School Bus Spins a Web (Book & Tape). Activity: Listen and follow along in the book with the taped story. Materials: Cassette tape player, cassette, and book. Time to complete: 30-40 minutes.

6. Listening Station – Mighty Spiders (Book). Activity: Read story into tape. Materials: Cassette tape player, tape, book- Mighty Spiders. Time to Complete: 30-40 minutes.

7. Making Words Station (Mystery Word – Spiders) Activity: See how many words you can make out of the letters you have been provided and then see if you can figure out the mystery word. Save the letters you will be using them for another station. Materials: Letters for mystery word, paper for recording words made up, and pencil. Time to complete: 30-40 minutes.
 
8. Play – The Spider and the Fly. Activity: Act out the poem with your partner. You will each take two parts. Materials: Poem. Time to complete: 15-20 minutes.

9. Math Station – Spider Word Problems. Activity: Write four word problems using spiders. Two will be addition problems and two will be subtraction problems. Materials: Paper, pencils and spider cutouts for manipulative. Time to complete: 30-40 minutes.

10. Research Station – Spider Books. Activity: Using any of the books provided answer the five questions on the activity you have been given. Materials: Spider Books, paper, and pencil. Time to complete: 30-45 minutes.

11. Book Station – Spider Step Book. Activity: Write the title of your spider on the top step. Then list five important facts about the title and illustrate each step. When you are finish glue your mystery word across the top of your book. Materials: Step book – already assembled by teacher, pencil, crayons, colored pencils, and letters of mystery word, glue. Time to complete: 40-60 minutes.

12. VCR - Spider Video. Backyard Science. Activity: View the video and answer the questions. Materials: TV, VCR, Video, pencil, and activity sheet. Time to complete: 25-30 minutes.

13. Art Station – Glitter Web w/one word describing self. Activity: Put name on the back of paper! On black construction paper draw a picture of a web with chalk. Think of one word that describes something about you. Write that word in the web. Using glue outline only your web. Using glitter sprinkle web. Let dry. Using glue outline word in web. Take some yarn and glue it on the outline of your word in the web. Materials: Black construction paper, white chalk, glitter, and yarn, glue. Time to complete: 40-50 minutes.
