    STATION ACTIVITIES:

    Station One: Map and Globe
    Materials: Handout: World Grid (Ring of Fire), purple colored pencil, list of volcanoes and their coordinates
    Task: Students plot the Ring of Fire.
    Time: 45 minutes

    Station Two: Scholastic News
    Materials: Scholastic News for January 31, 1994, worksheet: Reading the Richter Scale
    Task: Students read the Scholastic News and work the worksheet.
    Time: 45 minutes

    Station Three: TV/VCR
    Materials: TV/VCR, video: Earthquake Preparedness, Tremblies Get Shook worksheet
    Task: Students watch the video and complete the worksheet.
    Time: 45 minutes

    Station Four: Computer Station 1
    Materials: CD-ROM, questions
    Task: Students go to the Library and do the CD-ROM and answer the questions that go along with it.
    Time: 45 minutes

    Station Five: Computer Station 2
    Materials:
    Task: Students will write an acrostic poem using the words volcanoes or earthquakes and print it with a picture.
    Time: 45 minutes

    Station Six: GeoSafari
    Materials: GeoSafari cards: Science
    Task: Students will work cards #12 and #18.
    Time: 45 minutes

    Station Seven: Comprehension
    Materials: Handouts: A Myth About Volcanoes, Two Myths About Earthquakes
    Task: Students will read the handouts and answer the questions.  Then they will write their own myths.
    Time: 45 minutes

    Station Eight: Art Station
    Materials: Handouts, colored pencils
    Task: Students will read the three handouts on the three kinds of volcanoes, answer the questions, and color the pictures.
    Time: 45 minutes

    Station Nine: Laserdisc
    Materials: Laserdisc player, videodisc: Earth Science Volume 1, lesson pages
    Task: Students turn on the laserdisc player, take out the lesson pages and do lessons 3, 4, and 5.  After viewing the laser disc, students take a Plates and Volcanoes worksheet and complete.
    Time: 45 minutes

    Station Ten: Research
    Materials: Library books
    Task: Students read from the books and type on the computer in the room three paragraphs of information they found in the books.
    Time: 45 minutes

    Station Eleven: Crossword Puzzle
    Materials: Crossword puzzle and colored pencils
    Task: Students complete the crossword puzzle and color the picture.
    Time: 45 minutes

    Station Twelve: K'NEX
    Materials: K'NEX set, K'NEX questions, K'NEX graph
    Task: Students construct one of the three types of volcanoes using the K'NEX pieces, after which they will answer the questions and fill in the graph according to the volcano.
    Time: 45 minutes

    Station Thirteen: Vocabulary
    Materials: construction paper, white copy paper, vocabulary list, dictionary
    Task: Students make a book following the directions provided and the sample provided.  Write the definition of the words provided.
    Time: 45 minutes

    Station Fourteen: Art Station 2
    Materials: layered book, colored pencils, and typed descriptions of the layers of the earth
    Task: Students construct a layered book and color the pictures.  Cut out and glue on the paragraphs.
    Time: 45 minutes

    Sponge Station 1
    Materials: Handout: Inside the Earth
    Task: Students follow the directions on the handout.

    Sponge Station 2
    Materials: Styrofoam ball
    Task: Students color and label the layers of the earth on the styrofoam mode.  As they do this, they eat a Tootsie Pop (layers of the earth).

    Sponge Station 3
    Materials: An empty 10-12 oz. bottle, a large dishpan or roasting pan, warm water, liquid soap, baking soda, vinegar, a tablespoon, a measuring cup.
    Task: Stand the empty bottle up in the dishpan or roasting pan, measure one cup of warm water and pour it into the bottle, add a few drops of liquid soap, add one tablespoon of baking soda.  If nothing happens, add 1 tablespoon vinegar.  Describe what happened.

    Sponge Station 4
    Materials: Bowl of beach sand, comb
    Task: Slide your hand holding the comb deep into the bowl and smooth the sand over it.  Flick the comb's teeth hard with your thumb.  Watch the vibrations show as patterns in the sand.
     

    CULMINATING ACTIVITIES:

  • students will complete the writing activities (itemized under the station activities)
  • students will complete the illustration (itemized under station activities)
  • students will display art work on classroom walls
  • students will complete the folder for station assignments

    STATION CARDS:



    STATION ONE  - MAP AND GLOBE

    1. Take a Ring of Fire worksheet and a colored pencil.

    2. Follow the directions and plot the volcano sites using latitude and longitude points.

    3. Connect the points to create the Ring of Fire.

    4. Color the land area green and the ocean areas blue.

    5. Be sure your name is on the worksheet and leave your station area neat and organized.



    STATION TWO - SCHOLASTIC NEWS

    1. Do not write on the scholastic news.

    2. Read the scholastic news that is provided.

    3. Complete the worksheet- Reading The Richter Scale. #2 should be in paragraph form.

    4. Copy the What To Do In An Earthquake Bulletin.

    5. Leave the station folder neat and organized.



    STATION THREE - VIDEO STATION

    1. Make sure the video is rewound.

    2. Turn on the TV and VCR. Insert the video- Movers and Shakers. Push play.

    3. Rewind the video after you have finished viewing.

    4. Take The Tremblies Get Shook worksheet and complete it.

    5. Leave the station folder neat and organized.



    STATION FOUR - COMPUTER STATION 1

    1. Turn on the computer and insert the CD-ROM Violent Earth. Take a question sheet and answer as you view the CD-ROM.

    2. Choose Volcanoes and view the following sections: What Is A Volcano?, Types of Volcanoes, Lava, and Hot Springs. Be sure to answer the questions as you go.

    3. Go back to the main menu and choose Earthquakes this time. View the following sections: What Is An Earthquake?, Earthquake Zones, Measuring Earthquakes, and Predicting Earthquakes. Be sure to answer the questions as you view the CD-ROM.

    4. Go back to the main menu and click on quit.  Return the CD-ROM to its case and turn the computer off.

    5. Leave the station folder neat and organized.

    STATION FIVE - COMPUTER STATION 2

    1. Write an acrostic poem using either the word volcano or earthquake.

    2. Make sure you spell correctly and all phrases are about volcanoes or earthquakes.

    3. Type your poem on the computer. Use the QuickCam to take your picture and put it on your poem. Print when you are finished.

    4. Leave your station folder neat and organized.



    STATION SIX - GEOSAFARI STATION

    1. Turn on the GeoSafari, put in card #18 and enter code 8180.

    2. Play the card.

    3. Replace card #18 with card #12 and enter code 3520.

    4. Play the card.

    5. Put the cards back in the pack and turn off the GeoSafari.

    6. Leave the station neat and organized.



    STATION SEVEN -COMPREHENSION/WRITING

    1. Take one of each of the two worksheets. Put your name on both.

    2. Read two myths about earthquakes, answer the three questions at the bottom, then turn it over and write your own used to think story.

    3. Read a myth about volcanoes, answer the three questions at the bottom of the page, turn it over and write your own myth.

    4. Leave the station folder neat and organized.



    STATION EIGHT - ART STATION 1

    1. Read Three Kinds of Volcanoes and answer the three questions.

    2. Color the three kinds of volcanoes according to the directions on each sheet.

    3. Leave the station folder neat and organized.



    STATION NINE - LASER DISC

    1. Turn on the TV and laser disc. Insert the disc shiny side down.

    2. Take out the lesson pages to follow along with the disc. You will be doing lessons 3, 4, and 5.

    3. Start with frame #18407.

    4. After you have finished the lessons, take a Plates and Volcanoes worksheet. Hints are in frames 23554, 23555, and 23556.

    5. Remove the disc and return it to its case. Turn off the TV and laser disc player.

    6. Leave the station folder neat and organized.



    STATION TEN - RESEARCH/MEDIA CENTER

    1. Mrs. Gardner will have books pulled from the shelves for you to use.

    2. Choose a book from those provided. Read the book.

    3. After you have finished the book, write a paragraph or two on what you have learned from the book.

    4. After you have finished writing the paragraph you will need to type it on the computer.

    5. Be sure your name is on the paper.

    6. Leave the books neat and organized.



    STATION ELEVEN - CROSSWORD PUZZLE

    1. Take a crossword puzzle from the folder.

    2. Put your name on it.

    3. Use the clues on the back to complete the puzzle.

    4. Leave the station folder neat and organized.



    STATION TWELVE - K'NEX STATION

    1. Look at the pictures of the three types of volcanoes: shield, cinder cone, and composite cone.

    2. Construct one of the three types using the K'NEX pieces.

    3. Answer the questions on the handout.

    4. Create a bar graph to show how many pieces were used for your volcano.

    5. Use colored pencils to construct the graph. Colored pencils should indicate the color of the K'NEX pieces (example: red rods = red pencil).

    6. Each square on the graph equals (2) K'NEX pieces.

    7. Leave your volcano for others to see.

    8. Leave this station neat and organized.

    K'NEX STATION QUESTIONS

    1. How many K'NEX pieces were used to make your volcano?

    2. How many connectors were used to make your volcano?

    3. Did it take more connectors or rods to make your volcano?

    4. Which color rod was used the least in your volcano? How many were there?

    5. Which color rod was used the most to make your volcano? How many were there?



    STATION THIRTEEN - VOCABULARY STATION

    1. Take a vocabulary booklet, open it up and on each flap write one of the vocabulary words from the list provided.

    2. Use a dictionary and write the definition of each word under its flap.

    3. Label the outside of your booklet VOCABULARY and draw a picture of a volcano.

    4. Leave the station folder neat and organized.

    STATION FOURTEEN - ART STATION 2

    1. Take a layered book and one handout.

    2. Color the handout like the example provided.

    3. Cut the handout into four strips.

    4. Glue the strips on the layered book like the example provided.

    5. Copy the paragraphs about the three layers of the earth under the appropriate flaps.

    6. Leave your station folder neat and organized.



    SPONGE STATION ONE

    1. Take the handout inside the earth.

    2. Follow the directions listed in the lower left hand corner.

    3. Leave the station folder neat and organized.



    SPONGE STATION TWO - STYROFOAM BALL

    Before you begin this station take a Tootsie roll pop to eat as you do this station. The Tootsie roll pop represents the earth. The wrapper is the crust. The hard candy is the mantle. The Tootsie roll center is the outer core and the stick is the inner core. Enjoy!

    1. First take one of the Styrofoam balls provided.

    2. Take the red marker and color the very center of the cut out part red. This is the inner core.

    3. Take the purple marker and color around the red with purple. This is the outer core.

    4. Take the yellow marker and color around the purple with it.  This is the mantle, remember the mantle is the thickest part, so you should have more yellow.

    5. Now finish the cutout part with green. This is the crust of the earth.

    6. Now take a strip that labels each part of your model and put them on each part with a pin. Your model should resemble the model provided for you.

    7. Leave this station neat and organized.



    SPONGE STATION THREE

    1.  Sand the empty bottle up in the dishpan or roasting pan.

    2.  Measure one cup of warm water and pour it into the bottle.

    3.  Add a few drops of liquid soap.

    4.  Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda.

    5.  If nothing happens, add 1 tablespoon of vinegar.  Describe what happened.

    6.  Why do you think this happened?



    SPONGE STATION FOUR

    1. You will need the bowl of beach sand and a plastic comb.

    2. Slide your hand holding the comb deep into the bowl and smooth the sand over it. Flick the comb's teeth hard with your thumb. Watch the vibrations show as patterns in the sand.

    3. Clean up any spilled sand.

    4. Leave this station neat and clean.
