Description:
This
is an introduction lesson for the major systems that compose the human
body. Activities that use PowerPoint, movie clips, graphic organizer,
and a foldable to keep the students actively involved in learning how
each body system contributes to the regulation, growth, and maintenance
of the human body.
|
| Expected
Duration:
4
sessions, each being 40 to 50 minutes in length
|
| Florida
Sunshine State Standard/GLE:
SC.F.1.3.1.8.1
The student understands that living things are composed of major systems
that function in reproduction, growth, maintenance, and regulation.
|
| Materials:
Computer
& speakers
Data projector (alternative DVD/ VCR)
Alternative DVD/ VCR
Terms/ strips of paper
Envelopes

Preparations:
Day
1
1. Organize computer, speakers, projector (or DVD/VCR), strips, envelopes,
foldable paper (2 colored pieces per student), & prizes (not necessary)
materials before the lesson.
2. Print copies of terms/phrases (see Additional Files) one group of terms for
each team of 3-4 students.
3. Cut strips that will separate the terms/phrases.
4. Separate each group of strips and put in numbered envelopes that correlate
with the number of groups needed for each class.
5. Read over directions to making foldable and make a sample to help instructions go more
smoothly (see Additional
Files- instructions are found on PowerPoint slide #8)
6. Print copies
of checklist and quiz (see Additional Files) one per student.
7. Print copy of
foldable sample (see Additional Files)

| Instructions:
Day
1
1. Introduce lesson with PowerPoint: (see additional files Note: This
PowerPoint presentation is correlated with Prentice Hall, Science Explorer,
Human Biology and Health) Introduction slide: includes two text boxes,
1st list of major body systems & 2nd list of functions (parallel to
appropriate systems) Only show 1st text box and ask students to make a
list of the body systems given (on their own paper); then have the students
write out beside each system what they think the function of each body
system is; hopefully to attach previous knowledge to what they will be
learning; next, allow students to see the 2nd text box and have them make
corrections in their notes and write down the function(s) with the corresponding
body systems.
2. Continue the PowerPoint presentation & have student take notes
in their notebooks on the regulation and maintenance of human body systems,
while instructor frequently asks questions that keep students actively
involved & participating in class discussion.
3. Use united streaming video clips that are embedded in the PowerPoint
to introduce the body systems. (alternative, use video or DVD)
4. After introduction, during the class discussion & PowerPoint presentation,
students participate in a group activity that involves creating a large
scale graphic organizer (see PowerPoint slide #6 for instructions).
5. Using strips of paper (see Additional Files) that list body systems,
organs, & system functions, students classify & categorize each
appropriate term(s) and phrase(s) as individual teams.
Day 2
1. Continue the PowerPoint presentation and guide students in creating
the human body systems foldable that includes the systems, a sketch, organs,
& functions. (see Additional Files)
Day 3
1. Continue the PowerPoint presentation and guide students in creating
the human body systems foldable that includes the systems, a sketch, organs,
& functions. (see Additional Files and instruction in PowerPoint slide
#8 )
2. Collect student foldable and evaluate major system compositions, functions,
and illustrations using checklist. (see Additional Files)
Day 4
1. Give students a quiz assessing knowledge of the major body systems,
functions, and
compositions. (see Additional Files)
|
| Formative
Assessment:
Criteria:
1. Create a graphic organizer that includes each major body system and
its corresponding function(s).
2. Identify all of the individual body parts that contribute to the maintenance
& regulation of each body system.
3. Create a foldable that categorizes the body systems with their corresponding
body organs & functions.
4. Take a quiz that evaluates the students’ understanding of the
major body systems, their functions, and the organs that make these functions
possible.
Student Evidence:
Categorize vocabulary terms by constructing a graphic organizer with vocabulary
terms and phrases (see Additional Files) that classifies major body systems
with their corresponding functions, which maintain and regulate the human
body.
Method for Student Feedback:
Actively be involved in student categorization of systems, functions,
& organs that compose the systems; pull out terms (strips of paper)
that are incorrectly grouped and give students the opportunity to reorganize
the information. After completion of the correct graphic organizers, students
will create a foldable that organizes the information/ classifications
that can be used for studying and take a quiz to assess student understanding.
|
| Technology
Integration:
Students
view united streaming video clips that explain each body system, organs,
and functions in order to help develop a better understanding of the curriculum
and to aid in creating a human body foldable.
Instructor uses PowerPoint & video clips to facilitate student learning
by guiding class discussions on the human body systems and helping student
create information foldable
