Subject: American Museum of Natural History research essay contest results

Ms. Tallman,

For the second consecutive year,  Meigs Middle School has  3  students place in this national research contest. This year all three students are semi finalists.

Walker Blakenship “The Effect of EMF on Bird Roosting”   TAG 3rd period

Katie McBride  “The Squirrel Exhibition”   ADVANCED 4th period

Scott Willis “The Effect of Weather on Alligators”   ADVANCED 6th period

As semi finalists these students will not advance further, but what an honor!

“For this year's contest, students across the nation were invited to choose a topic in the areas of biology or Earth science. First, students planned an expedition that would provide new data, questions, or observations about their topic. They then shared their data and experiences through narrative essays that take the reader along on their expeditions. They included drawings, maps, and/or photographs that illustrated their research

The essays bear witness to student interest in the process of scientific inquiry, as well as an understanding of the importance of effectively communicating observations, analysis, and conclusions to others.

This marks the ten year of the Young Naturalist Awards, an annual program that recognizes young people in grades seven through twelve for excellence in the natural sciences.”*( Website quote)

I can’t wait to see the essays next year when the students get to use the equipment from the Toyota Tapestry Grant J

Hooray us!
