ON WEDNESDAY THE LADY SPARTANS PLAY VOLLEY BALL AGAINST RUCKEL AND THE SPARTAN CROSS COUNTRY TEAM RUNS AT FERRY PARK
BRUNER HONORS AMERICA'S HEROES
A Bruner (SAC) School Advisory Council Member stated, "...They had an awesome pep rally at school today! For those of you who missed it, I’m sorry. ...The school was allowed to borrow the flag from the Daily News and there were Disabled Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars and current military personnel there. The superintendent of education was there. The band played band director Mr. Laborde’s arrangement of “America the Beautiful”. They had a moment of silence. And then, there was a man from the Sheriff’s Department who played “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes. It was awesome! The whole gym was silent during that song. Our boys were also introduced, the cheerleaders did their thing, the Sparklers performed and the Step Team performed. What a treat! We can be very proud of Bruner and how this day was honored there.

The Disabled Veterans of America Chapter 57 and Chapter 72 along with the Veterans of Foreign War Chapter 5450 participated in the Rally with student representatives from different teams and organizations.

Deputy Kevin Foy of the Okaloosa County Sheriffs Department ended the inspirational rally by playing Amazing Grace with the bagpipes.

Mayor Mike Anderson visited Bruner last week and spoke to students in social studies classes about his responsibilities and the operations within the city. Mr. Cihanowic, an eighth grade US History teacher, setup the event so the Spartans could meet the mayor, ask questions, and learn about the local government
The Bruner cheerleaders returned from camp at Auburn University. The Spartans cheerleaders won the coveted spirit stick, the Herkie award, and the Top Team award. All 20 squad members were nominated as All-American cheerleaders, and Rebekah Glover, Ian Morris, and Joanna Walls made the final selections as All-Americans.

Team members include: Captains Riley Santos and Rebekah Glover, Brekianna McGriff, Ian Morris, Joanna Walls, Kristen Simms, Kilee McHenry, Courtney Frye, Alexus Flores, Ashton Taylor, Kathryn Brennan, Courtney Hart, Jade Lawson, Alexus Richardson, Kristin Hyder, Aaliyah Ruffin, Summer Lay, Emily Mills, Sydney Yoshida, and Chynna Cunningham. The cheerleaders are coached by Kim Tryon.
Bruner Middle School, once again, is ranked an 'A+' school district according to data released by the Florida Department of Education. Dr. Tibbetts, our superintendant, stated, "I join all parents and educators in celebrating the success of our students. Our school district ranking as an 'A+' reflects the excellent instruction by our teachers, the great learning on behalf of our students and the commitment of our parents and community to education." This shows that our emphasis on secondary redesign is paying off. We must continue this progress. There is still much work to be done in improving the achievement of students in our subgroups, including students with disabilities and students in poverty.
NEWS RELEASE: Bruner receives accolades for its improvements in reading...
FCAT Scores Continue to Show Improvement for Okaloosa County Students- BEST in Florida
With the most recent announcement of FCAT results, it is obvious that the Okaloosa County School District continues its legacy of excellence. A greater percentage than ever of our students are reading at proficiency, completing complex math problems, and understanding scientific concepts. In addition, our African American students have narrowed the achievement gap in all subjects. This is a result of the hard work of our teachers in the classroom and the commitment to excellence of students and parents. Through training, the use of reading strategies, and the application of science and math concepts for relevant learning, our teachers excel in their efforts to prepare students for a lifetime of success. Congratulations to all students and teachers in our district! On Thursday, June 12, 2008, parents may view their students’ scores via the FCAT Parent Network using the secure login and password provided by your school. Printed reports of individual student scores will be made available next week.
As a result of our secondary school literacy focus, all middle and high schools in Okaloosa County showed reading gains in percent of students proficient. The greatest gains in secondary reading were at Bruner and Pryor Middle Schools and Baker and Laurel Hill high Schools. Elliott Point and Laurel Hill Elementary schools both had 7% reading percentage gains. Growth at these schools is especially significant due to their socio-economic status. Eglin Elementary showed the highest math gain in the district with a 13% increase in proficient students. In middle school, Meigs Middle School and Laurel Hill Middle School demonstrated 7% student proficiency gains in math. Baker High School showed a 5% proficiency gain in math; the greatest high school math gains in the district. In science, tested at eighth and eleventh grade in secondary, Okaloosa County was first place in Florida with Laurel Hill Middle School demonstrating a 30% point gain. In elementary school science, Wright Elementary School and Northwest Florida Ballet Academie posted the highest gains.
I wish all of you a wonderful summer and encourage all students to keep reading during vacation. Research strongly indicates that children who do not continue to read during the summer months risk losing reading gains made during the school year. This summer regression causes children to be behind when school starts in the Fall. There is a suggested summer reading list for each grade level at www.justreadfamilies.org, with tips to help parents nurture a reading-friendly environment at home. Have a safe and relaxing break. I look forward to another great school year in 2008-2009. It is an honor to serve you.
If you did not receive your final report card, please contact our main offices. You may need to return a Bruner library book, text book or uniform!
